Dream Kitchen Renovation Diary

A day-to-day account of our long-overdue kitchen renovation

And so it begins…

Let me just start by saying that the picture you see posted above is NOT my kitchen. No, if this were my kitchen, I wouldn’t change a thing.

The above picture is a kitchen designed by Monarch Kitchen & Bath Centre of Pickering, Ontario. They’re the company we’ve hired to transform our dull, ordinary kitchen into a stunning, practical space we will enjoy for years to come.

As you’ll soon see, the kitchen we have now is a “before” picture waiting to happen. Have you ever seen the Home Depot commercial where a women is fantasizing about a wrecking ball demolishing her kitchen? Well, that’s me.

I absolutely hate the way my kitchen looks.

I know “hate” is a strong word, but believe me, I’m not exaggerating. Ask any of my friends or family and they’ll tell you that I’ve spent the past eight years cursing my kitchen’s hideous linoleum floor, browny-beige backsplash, almond-coloured stove and…well, you get the idea.

So why, you ask, did we move into a house with such an ugly kitchen? Obviously, we didn’t think it was that ugly when we bought the house. We knew we’d have to rip up the floor and install ceramic tile. But once we moved in, we realized that the hideous yellow floor was just a small part of the problem.

You see, we have a big kitchen just oozing with potential to be more than the poorly-designed, beige ugliness that it is. And so, while we waited for the money tree to sprout in the backyard, we did little things to ease the pain…like changing the door handles on the cupboards and painting the walls.

Unfortunately, this did not help.

So a few months ago, we decided that enough was enough. Money tree or no money tree (believe me, there is no money tree), it was time to take the plunge!

This is the story of a dream kitchen in the making–our dream kitchen. Hop aboard, fasten your seat belts because it’s going to be a wild ride!
